Course Description

Since the beginning of time, humans have lived with the day/night cycle of the earth’s rotation, which also balances perfectly with the needs of the body’s circadian rhythm. With the creation of fluorescent light and, more recently, solid-state lighting (LED), artificial light has now added unnatural color to evening light, causing disruption to the body’s physiological cycle along with unexpected medical results. In this class, we’ll discuss how natural and artificial light affect our health. We will cover how light affects the human eye and circadian rhythm, light and cancer, light flicker, migraines, the relationship of blue light and young people, sleep and lighting, lighting as a disinfectant, and an assortment of medical conditions that have shown improvements with better lighting choices.
