ZENV1093 - 40-Hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER)

Course Description

The 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) course is for workers, managers and supervisors involved in cleanup operations, emergency response operations and storage, and disposal or treatment of hazardous substances or uncontrolled hazardous waste sites.

The course meets initial training requirements found in OSHA Standard 29 CFR Part 1910.120 for general site workers who participate in hazardous waste operations where they may be exposed to hazardous substances and health hazards.

Topics include protection against hazardous chemicals, elimination of hazardous chemicals, safety of workers and the environment and OSHA regulations. Participants will learn health and safety procedures and personnel protection during work operations at hazardous material sites.

All training materials are provided. Students are expected to participate in hands-on exercises, group tabletops and dress-out, followed by a final exam. Participants must have additional hands-on training in the donning, doffing and use of the personal protective equipment required for their job sites in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.120.

Learner Outcomes

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

• Read and understand OSHA regulations and requirements and summarize site characterization.
• Understand the principles of toxicology and how they relate to various types of chemical exposures.
• Describe potentially hazardous situations involving corrosives, solvents, oxidizers and reactive chemicals.
• Understand chemicals and the hazards they present in the workplace.
• Summarize the components of OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard and the steps for any hazard communication program.
• Identify radiation hazards and different types of radiation.
• Identify different types of respiratory equipment, personal protective equipment (PPE) and how to choose the correct PPE.
• List the elements of site security and understand the principles of decontamination as well as levels of decontamination and methods.
• Describe a medical surveillance program and understand its purpose.
• Identify the types and methods of air monitoring, understand confined space permit system, identify main confined-space atmospheric hazards and types of ventilation, and understand medical concerns associated with confined spaces.
• Understand the various considerations in an emergency situation and the importance of training and actions to personal safety and the safety of others.
• Use detectors and monitors at a hazardous waste site.

Module quizzes and final exam
A quiz is given at the end of each module. You must score at least 70% on each module quiz to move forward in the course. Once you have successfully completed all modules, you must pass a final exam to receive full credit for the course. You must score at least 70% to pass the exam and complete the course.
