Course Description

The Tri-C JazzFest Academy's PLAY! is a performance-based weekend program for students who are passionate about jazz. Open to instrumentalists and vocalists of all levels, ages 12-18, the program offers beginner, intermediate and advanced tracks.

Beginner:

  • Ensemble rehearsals and sectional workshops
  • Music reading
  • Introduction to improvisation
  • Music theory
  • Access to master classes with local and national artists
  • Final performance

Intermediate and Advanced:

  • Big band and small group rehearsals
  • Music theory and composition
  • Improvisation
  • Sectional workshops
  • Access to master classes with local and national artists
  • Final and select community performances.

New students are required to submit a placement video. Instructions can be found HERE.

Spring 2026 Schedule
Dates: Jan. 24 - Apr. 25, 2026 (No class Mar. 14 and Apr. 4)
Day/Time: Saturdays | 1:30 – 4:30 p.m.
Location: Gill and Tommy LiPuma Center for Creative Arts
Cost: $350 
Final Performance: Saturday, Apr. 25 at 1 p.m.

Section Notes

Ages: 12-18
Experience Level: All levels welcome*
Cost: $400 per semester
*Students must submit a placement video to determine their track assignment if they are joining the JazzFest Academy for the first time or playing a different instrument.

JazzFest Academy classes will not meet on November 26.
