Course Description

Presented by the Cleveland Museum of Art

This course will offer insights into the materials and processes that artists use in making art and the methods museum professionals use to conserve and exhibit them. Hear perspectives from conservators, preparators, curators and educators on the materials, making, care and display of art. Individual session topics include: the special exhibition Picasso and Paper, which highlights Picasso's appreciation of and experimentation with paper revealed in works ranging from collages, sculptures, drawings and prints in an array of techniques; the connections between an 18th century richly decorated burse (purse) to hold the monarch's Great Seal of the Realm and portraits in the colonial American gallery; the importance of calligraphy and ceramics in Japanese culture; and discussion of other parts of the museum's permanent collection and rotating exhibitions.
