Course Description

This self-paced online course is designed specifically for practicing allied health professionals in the field of medical scribing.

The course provides a simulated practice of recording verbal communication encountered during patient-doctor interaction and the recording of clinical events as they unfold. It also includes a study of procedures related to the retrieval of diagnostic test results. Procedures used in scheduling diagnostic tests, follow-up appointments, etc., are discussed and practiced. An emphasis is placed on professional and ethical behavior in a clinical health care setting.

Mentor feedback and assistance available to all students as needed. Assignments and assessments are lesson-based and should be completed before progressing to the next lesson.

Students who complete this comprehensive course will receive a certificate of completion from ProTrain and the American Healthcare Documentation Professionals Group (AHDPG) and are eligible to sit for AHDPG's national certification exam.

Learner Outcomes

Upon completion, students will be able to:

  • Understand the profession, roles, etiquette and personality of a functioning and successful scribe, including HIPAA and medico-legal requirements..
  • Understand the intrinsic value of a scribe to a provider and the health care team.
  • Comprehend the basic health care economics: ethical and legal aspects.
  • Comprehend coding and reimbursement for labs and diagnostic procedures.
  • Describe the functions of electronic health records and explain the advantages offered over paper-based records.
  • Explain the importance of clinical standards in the development of interoperable electronic health records.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how electronic health records are used in physician practices and other outpatient settings.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how electronic health records are used in hospitals.
  • Effectively utilize information technology and medical terms as they apply to electronic health records.

Students will have access to the mentor-supported online course for eight weeks.
