Technological advances now make wind energy a cost-effective solution for the world’s ever-growing energy needs. The United States leads in the overall wind power capacity. As the wind energy industry continues to expand in the U.S. and around the globe, it will provide many opportunities for new careers. These careers extend beyond the wind farm to manufacturing plants, offices, construction, operations and maintenance.
This course provides an overview of wind-energy history, basic concepts, costs and uses. It covers wind-energy conversion and applications of various wind-turbine systems.
Lesson 1: Introduction to Wind Energy Tech
The introductory lesson will offer a glimpse into working in the wind energy field on a daily basis. Learn what it takes to operating wind energy equipment safely and efficiently.
Lesson 2: Safety
The second lesson of the course comprehensively reviews various safety requirements, equipment and techniques to operate, adjust, and repair wind energy equipment. This lesson emphasizes safety in and around wind energy equipment, as well as electrical and chemical safety, and how to safely perform work in a tightly confined space. Participants are asked to review both the chapter materials and accompanying appendices in this lesson.
Lesson 3: Equipment Testing and Inspection
An important part of maintaining equipment is to ensure it is operating safely and properly at all times. This lesson will cover fundamental procedures, action steps and key takeaways on the testing and inspection process.
Lesson 4: Lubrication and Fluids
Wind energy equipment must be lubricated with special chemical compounds to prevent damage. The third lesson of the course looks at different lubrication processes and fluids that are used in wind energy equipment. Learn about lubrication schedules and other systems that may be impacted. Participants are asked to review both the chapter materials and accompanying appendices in this lesson.
Lesson 5: Hardware Bolting and Alignments
Wind energy equipment must withstand enormous force and energy in order to function. This lesson covers common bolting patterns in wind energy equipment and required alignments for equipment to operate properly. Additional material provided in the appendices covers torque values and power tool pressures versus torque tool converters.
Lesson 6: Wind Energy Tower Component Analysis - Part 1
This lesson in the course begins with the first of two parts on the core structures of a wind energy product. We focus on the tower itself, machine head,and drive train that generates power within the unit.
Lesson 7: Wind Energy Tower Component Analysis - Part 2
This lesson focuses on wind energy devices, drive train and exterior of the equipment. Upon completion of this lesson, participants should have the foundational knowledge to begin a career as a wind energy technician.
Participants will have 12 months to complete this online self-paced course.
