Course Description

The purpose of the Certified Logistics Technician program (CLT) is to recognize through certification individuals who demonstrate mastery of the core competencies of material handling at the front-line level (entry-level through front-line supervisor) through successful completion of the certification assessments. The goal of the CLT certification program is to raise the level of performance of material handling and distribution workers both to assist the individuals in finding higher-wage jobs and to help employers ensure their workforce increases the company’s productivity and competitiveness. The CLT program consists of two parts: the foundational-level Certified Logistics Associate (CLA) Certificate and the mid-level technical CLT Certification. Before sitting for the CLT assessment, candidates must have a CLA Certificate (MSSC, 2018).

The MSSC CLT is delivered in a blended learning format. The course outline was developed in accordance with MSSC CLT training standards and materials, which includes:

Course Outline

CLA: Course Description and Objectives:

The course covers the material handling aspect of the global supply chain and describes the foundation knowledge that frontline material handling workers should master to perform well. It is designed to give students a broad overview of the industry and how the frontline worker fits into that environment (MSSC, 2016).

Course and Learning Objectives:

The course is delivered in a blended (classroom and online) format and consists of nine course modules or chapters to be covered over 35 hours.

Forklift training will be included in the CLA training.

Upon completion of the CLA training, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate knowledge of supply chain management and workplace competencies in performing critical activities across the supply-chain environment.

2. Demonstrate knowledge of safety principles and workplace competencies in the adherence and performance of safety activities within warehouse and distribution work environments.

3. Demonstrate knowledge of quality control and workplace competencies in performing activities that drive excellence in quality within warehouse and distribution work environments.

4. Demonstrate knowledge of logistics inside and outside the organization, and workplace competencies in performing work activities in the logistics environment.

5. Demonstrate knowledge of various types of material handling equipment and workplace competencies in operating equipment and adhering to safety standards.

6. Demonstrate knowledge and workplace competencies in teamwork, workplace conduct and communication (verbal and written) as outlined in employers Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

CLT: Course Description and Objectives:

It is designed to give students practical insight into the industry and how the frontline work fits into that environment (MSSC, 2016).

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of CLT training, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate knowledge of order processing, product receiving, storage, packaging and shipping and workplace competencies in performing related activities in warehouse and distribution environments.

2. Demonstrate knowledge of logistics documents and workplace competencies in processing related documents according to standards.

3. Demonstrate knowledge of inventory control and workplace competencies in receiving, storing, shipping, packaging and managing inventory level, calculating inventory storage costs, life cycles and returns in warehouse and distribution work environments.

4. Demonstrate knowledge of hazmat principles and workplace competencies in safe handling, storage and transport of hazardous materials.

5. Demonstrate knowledge of transportation modes and workplace competencies in the evaluation and selection of best practices in transportation.

6. Demonstrate knowledge of dispatch and tracking operations and documentation, and workplace competencies in performing work-related activities.

7. Demonstrate knowledge of metric conversions and workplace competencies in using metric tables, and calculating measures and metrics.

Learner Outcomes

The Supply Chain, Logistics Technology and Warehouse Program at Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) recognizes individuals who demonstrate mastery of the core competencies of material handling at the front line (supervision). This program assists logistics workers in finding higher wage jobs and helps employers ensure their workers are capable of increasing the company’s productivity and competitiveness.

The Supply Chain, Logistics Technology and Warehouse lab curriculum provides students the opportunity to learn in a practical application environment. During hands on warehouse activities, students directly and safely simulate roles and responsibilities, while using warehouse equipment and technology.

Students who successfully complete the program receive five (5) certificates:

  • Supply Chain, Logistics Technology and Warehouse Certificate of Completion
  • Manufacturing Skill Standards Council Certified Logistics Associate (CLA),
  • Manufacturing Skill Standards Council Certified Logistics Technician (CLT),
  • Forklift Operator,
  • OSHA 10 plus a Red Cross Safety Card to include Adult First Aid/CPR/AED.

Admission Requirements:

Must be at least 18 years of age (Candidates younger than 18 years of age, are not permitted to operate forklift equipment).
