Course Description

This course introduces students to fundamental sewing basics through garment construction. Students will learn how to construct a project using a commercial pajama pattern (McCall's M7515). Material and fabric needs will be discussed in the first class. Sewing machines will be provided for students not wanting to bring their own.

  •  Variety pack of hand sewing needles
  •  Seam ripper
  •  Thread to match fabric
  •  Tape measure
  •  Marking chalk pencil or water-soluble fabric marking pen
  •  Seam gauge 

Course Outline

First class:

  • Practice with fabric, thread and straight pins
  • Basic machine troubleshooting
  • Practice installing needle, winding and installing bobbin
  • Importance of tension
  • Choosing correct pattern size, fabric and notions
  • Understanding patterns

Second class:

  • Fabric components
  • Reading a pattern
  • Begin working on garment

Third through sixth classes:

  • Work on constructing and sewing pajamas using commercial pattern

Learner Outcomes

Students will acquire a beginning knowledge of sewing machine setup, operations, supplies and notions. They will become familiar with fabric layout, marking techniques and essential construction skills to construct a simple project.
