Course Description

This course introduces beginners to the creative and technical possibilities to digital photography. Through demonstrations and hands-on sessions, students learn the basics of using cameras and imaging software to produce digital photographs. Topics include camera operation, shutter speed, aperture, focal length, RAW file formats, white balance, and composition. Using Adobe Lightroom, participants also delve into file management, image enhancement, and printing. Lectures on historical and contemporary artwork explore creative approaches to photography, and assignments build photographic skill sets. Please note: Students signed up for the class will loan DSLR camera. Class enrollment limited to 15 students. This class is a free, non-credit class part of the Cleveland Print Room's Teen Institute Arts Mastery Program.

In this course, students will explore how photography can transform public spaces and engage communities. They'll investigate the relationship between photography, installation, and public art, focusing on how visual works can spark dialogue and influence shared environments. Through site-specific projects and collaborations, students will learn to conceptualize, develop, and present their work in ways that activate public spaces. Guest artists specializing in public art will share their insights, exposing students to various tools, techniques, and career pathways. This class emphasizes the power of photography to inspire change and encourages students to explore the intersection of art, place, and community. This class will include basic digital photography skills.

This course encourages students to step outside and explore how digital photography can document and celebrate the natural environment. Students will learn techniques for photographing landscapes, wildlife, and natural textures while gaining practical experience with light, composition and environmental storytelling. Discussions will focus on the role of photography can play in conversation, environmental activism, and art. Guided field excursions will offer hands-on opportunities to capture dynamic scenes in nature. Visiting photographers will introduce students to techniques for outdoor photography, as well as potential career paths in nature and environmental photography.
