Course Description

The Set Construction Workshop prepares future film and theater technicians for entry-level positions by providing a unique opportunity to learn directly from professionals working on Cleveland feature film, commercial and theater sets. Trainees will work side by side with — and be mentored by — film and theater professionals to build and dress a set for a short film created during the Film Crew Intensive Training.

Course Outline

Week 1: Shop Etiquette and Safety; Tool Training

Week 2: Learning to Read Designs; Set Construction

Week 3: Scenic Painting Techniques

Week 4: Load In; Set Dressing

Learner Outcomes

  • Understand proper tool handling and safety and on-set protocols
  • Be able to read and implement set design
  • Discern the varying design and construction considerations for theater and film 
  • Network with industry professionals and fellow trainees
  • Help build the Northeast Ohio film and theater industry workforce
  • Receive work-for-hire compensation and an IMDB Credit

Notes

Trainees will be hired to load in the set onto the stage during the last week of class. These trainees must sign a participation agreement, be available for the full four weeks and be physically capable of lifting and moving heavy objects. All trainees hired will receive a stipend.
