Course Description

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the goal of many philosophers, writers, political scholars and scientists was to establish reason as man’s defining feature. Since only rational investigation could reveal the truths of man, nature and the cosmos, traditional ideas about religion, politics and morality had to be reimagined. The United States ­— the first secular democracy in the world — is the direct result of Enlightenment thought.
