Course Description

Artists have depicted landscapes in art for centuries, and the genre continues to captivate audiences.  The landscapes of certain regions (geographic, political, and social) have been influential to artists in terms of subject matter, materials, and style, as well.  In this course, participants can explore artists’ depictions of landscapes, in addition to the diversity of peoples, traditions, and artistic expressions from across many lands.  Session topics will include:  the importance of the Seven Jeweled Mountain in North Korea and its role in the tradition of Korean landscape painting; the complex artistic relationships between northern and eastern African Christian kingdoms and the Byzantine Empire seen through secular and sacred art from across geographies and faiths; and how Monet captured the momentary effects of light and atmosphere on subjects, at various times of day and under different weather conditions.
