Course Description

This course is an introduction to the operations of directional bore machines, hydrovac units, excavating machines and related equipment for the construction of utility systems. Maintenance, equipment inspection and safety procedures will be covered. Students will perform basic operations of excavation through dedicated lab activities. Students must be 18 years or older due to the equipment used during lab activities per Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.

  4. Excavation trenching machine
  5. Directional bore operations

Learner Outcomes

Students will learn how to:

  • Analyze and perform the functions of directional bore machines, hydrovac units, excavating machines and related equipment
  • Demonstrate and recommend earthwork techniques for tractor backhoes
  • Demonstrate and justify the functions of a tractor with a front end loader
  • Analyze and perform the functions of a tractor with an excavating backhoe
  • Simulate and assess proper operations of an excavation trencher, directional bore machine and hydrovac

Prerequisite/Co-requisite: CNST-1290 Construction Print Reading and CNST-1751 Construction Safety or departmental approval
