Course Description

This course meets all NFPA 1670 guidelines and enables rescue teams to operate safely and effectively in structural collapse incidents involving the collapse or failure of lightframe, ordinary construction, un-reinforced and reinforced masonry construction. At the conclusion of this course, students will understand the procedures for recognizing unique collapse or failure hazards, and for stabilizing and shoring up structures. An increased emphasis on rescue will include search-and-rescue techniques intended to locate victims trapped inside and beneath collapse debris, discussion about procedures for accessing victims trapped inside and beneath collapse debris, procedures relevant to extrication operations involving packaging, and treating and removing victims within and beneath collapse debris.

REQUIRED MATERIALS

  • a sack lunch (you are not allowed to leave the site for lunch)
  • beverages for hydration
  • helmet (rescue style recommended)
  • ear protection
  • N95 masks
  • long pants/ long sleeve shirt or coveralls
  • gloves (rescue, extrication or just leather work style) not firefighting gloves
  • boots with toe/ shank protection
  • safety glasses or goggles
  • foul weather gear
  • tool belt with nail pouch/ tape measure (16')
  • framing hammer
